Coil igniter wiring

For engine experimenters, the MicroSquirt® PCB is offered in a module format with enhanced capabilities to be plugged into other boards. This is the place to discuss the MicroSquirt Module.

Coil igniter wiring

Post by warp21 »

How do you wire a coil igniter to the module? Unless I'm missing it I'm not seeing any real clear information in the manual.

You have Logic level Outputs on your Microsquirt Module...if you look under "Driving Coils" in the .info site, and track across to Logic Level Outputs you'll get the idea, but you'll need an ignition driver or a compatible stick coil (igniter).

It's still not very clear on what to do. Can I wire it up like I would on a v3.0 board? 330 ohm resistor to pin 1, coil pin2, ground pin 3 (BIP373)? It doesn't seem like this is correct to me.

Take a BIP373, wire the left pin to the module output, The center pin to coil and the right pin to ground. Then set the spark output to inverted/ going high. (from matt cramer)

No pull up resistor needed?

Hi warp21, maybe this will help you...this is a bit of the ignition schematic from B&G info pages...

As you can see, this is the cased MicroSquirt not the Module, but this is how Bruce B configured the ignition driver, so he used a resistor too. I used a bespoke driver box off eBay to drive my TCI stick coils using the LLO option, but Bruce's circuit worked fine for me in non LLO mode too.

Hope this helps.

Yeah i saw that the Microsquirt used a 1meg resistor to ground on pin 1 of the igniter. I was just wondering if this would be the same way on the Module.

I would think so, but it not my area :)
However at point 2 @ JP5 you have Logic Level Output, if you follow route 1 rather than 3 that the Module board does, you have LLO converted to drive a coil. 8)

The 1 meg resistor is there just in case someone configures the ignition output as an input (this would be hard to do... but could happen with a corrupt bootload). If the processor port is an input the pin would float without a pulldown termination, and it is possible (but not likely) that stray charging could activate the coil.

Its a paranoia component that i like to throw in from time to time for personal satisfaction, you really do not need it.
