VR signal issue

Post by chuckwade »

MS-II, 2.34, V3, VB921 with appropriate jumpers. When cranking, I am getting a signal approximately 12 times the actual i.e. cranking with plugs out and good battery yields about 350 to 400 RPM but Megatune registers 53~5400 RPM. The car is a SPI mini with 36-1 (I welded the missing 180 degree tooth in so it only has the missing tooth at approximately TDC). I have tried every configuration available and have not changed the signal to Megatune. I have pushed the car in gear to eliminate starter noise as the VR trigger is close to the starter with the same basic results albiet at a lower RPM. The simulator works consistantly since finishing the build. Do I need to run an ignition module to filter the signal? Is there some program allowing me to set up the actual 36-1 signal besides trigger return, calculated, trigger rise? The VR trigger outputs about .01 volt at low RPM and I have adjusted both trimmer potentiometers without any difference. What other information is necessary to help me with this issue.

1. i do not understand you tooth-wheel configuration. how many teeth does it have and how many are missing and where ?

2. do you have your crank pickup configured to EIDS or standard (one mark per tdc) ?

3. vr sensor has to be mounted very stable/steady, ideally about 1mm from the inductive gaps.if the gap is 3mm then no wonder it doesnt work.

4. make sure you have number of cylinders set correctly.

5. basically sounds like you have crank pikcup set to normal (one per tdc), 6 cylinders and eids wheel for crank pickup... that would give you exacly 12 times the actual rpm.

6. eids wheel expects the missing tooth at very precise location (i believe 90* for 4 cylinder) with reference to 1# TDC. otherwise it wont work.

MS-II with v2.34 does not do wheel decoding. It only works with either EDIS or 1 trigger per ignition event. So you should get about 18 times the real RPM in Megatune.

There is a non-official beta version for MS-II that does have wheel decoding. I don't know when this is going to released.

VR signal issue

Post by chuckwade »

!. The tooth wheel is 36 with a signal missing tooth at near TDC. 36-1

2. Crank pickup is configured for standard

3. VR pickup is OE (original equipment) and mounted directly to stock cast bellhousing.

4. I have checked the number of cylinders (4) as I wanted to make sure of my base work before asking for help.

5. ?

6. If the missing tooth is not a a very precise location then the MS-II will not be able to read it properly? If so, do you know the exact location of the missing tooth the computer would need? I would then cut the tooth out of the reluctor at the required location patch and the current missing tooth.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

ok, thats some usefull info.

well....

you get wrong rpm reading because you are using eids wheel while ms is configured for standard. you have configure ms to read eids wheel...

however, i'm not sure whether that will work.

i dont know much about eids, BUT AFAIK
you will need to use EIDS module (do you have one ?)

missing tooth MUST be at a precise location with regards to TDC. i *think* it is 90 degrees before 1# TDC, but i might be wrong. read up on eids.

as i said my knowledge of eids is limited, so I might be wrong, but from what you said i dont think it will work. i think you will have to:

1. realigh eids wheel to have missing tooth at correct location
2. use eids module and coils (basically whole complete eids setup with coild and control module)
3. have MS configured for eids.

i dont hink you can trigged coil(s) with MS using eids wheel.

I'm no expert either but I think with your setup you can only run a standard coil using the VB921 and cutting all the teeth but 2 or you can use EDIS with a properly placed missing tooth and hardware.

I also noticed your VR output is only .01V at crank. You should be seeing close to 1V AC at crank speed.
