Mechanical fuel pumps and surge tanks

Hi
I am considering using a mechanical fuel pump to supply a surge tank. Would like some input on how continues full flow may effect pump life as opposed to working against a float valve.
This fuel system will be used on a 383 HP Mopar with the standard fuel pump supplied for that engine.
Also somewhere on this lest (I think) there was a description of a fuel pressure sensor used on Ford non return fuel injection systems. Does some one have a few year and model numbers that would have this sensor?
Thanks
