Theres nothing wrong with the 4 window hall. It works, but for my situation I would prefer to not use it. I want to eventually switch to coil over plug, or coil pack ignition and ditch the distributor.

oh believe me. i wanted to use the crank sensor too. i would have loved to of figured it out. just was way too complicated and the car is my daily driver so i said screw it and bought the 4 window dizzy. i think this is a problem that is not going to be solved for some time from now unfortunately. who even knows what type of sensor this really is. it could be different on diff versions of vw's. the info that is out there is also really difficult to understand and unclear

Well I intend to solve it once and for all. The other information sources on this forum seem to have over-complicated the issue. I'll figure it out and post my results.

Ok I just talked to my local German Mad Scientist guy and this is what he says. You feed voltage to the VR sensor and get a signal back on one of the other pins. The last pin is for ground. It gives a square waveform that acts like a VR sensor that Megasquirt will love. That's all he said, but it's enough for me. I am going to try it when I get home tonight, and I'm sure it'll work. Then I am going to have to make a sticky or somehow once and for all solve all the questions on this topic!

you may solve many questions, but probably not all; I've heard that europe has different crank pickups than NA. I'd still love to see your results though!

I tried it with +12v and got nothing. I tried hooking it up all 9 different possible ways.

I tried hooking it up to +6v from a battery charger but that didn't work, it's possible that the battery charger isn't decent enough power though so i'll try the +5v from the proto area tommorow.

I have the wiring diagram here. Pins 1 and 2 both go the the ECU. Pin 3 is ground.

Try putting 1+2 together and feeding it to MS / silly scope
