No problem, total loss is entirely doable for sprint racers.
The trigger is your choice; the circuit I posted should do quite nicely, or you can add a trigger wheel. There is no real fuel timing with B&G code, so there is no benefit to more accuracy, and the single trigger pulse would be fine. If you add a proper trigger wheel, you may want to consider MS2/Extra code with its precise fuel timing capability.
