Boosting 14 psi for first time!

Post by BraneDeadx »

WEll where to start!!! today at work we were trying to play with some new concept about volumetric discharging of some product at like a pound an hour or something, i could care less all i do at work all day is sit on my bum and read the fourms :P hehe....

these guys had a normal presure regulator used on air compressors, now i know in past people used these as a cheap poor mans way of a manual boost controller, i always thought it was a lame way to get more boost!!! ...

well me being lazy and not wanting to swap wastegate springs i went down local hardware store and bought a 20 doller presure regulator... then cut my wastegate vacume hose, installed it and grab my laptop to go on a little drive... hehe :)

the first few runs i had to play with it to make sure i didnt over boost .... but the second i adjusted it just right and floored it, i was stuned!!!! i toped out at almost 15psi !!!!! now that was a rush i thought all hell was going break loose!!!! now little side note my stock spring is rated at 4 psi! so going from a little boost to a lot was a wild trip..... this is my first turbo car i ever owned or droven.... so it was fun for most part!...

after looking over the datalogs everything seemed good!.... my AFR was steady at 12 ish, then i looked at my timing and notice i was pretty much in the teen's when boosting that high, which aint bad, but with my air intake temps being 80 degrees (50 ambiant) i figure well im not going knock if i pull back some! so i did 3 degrees advance thought out the boost region and did another run, WOW car pulled even more so like i had ton more power out no where with same boost..... when doing 195 some KPA i was doing 20 ish advance.... im thinking pulling it back some more to see if i can get little more power out!!! ..

looking over other peoples spark maps , i have mine set so no matter what rpm range ur in, the advance is constant through out the boost, so im thinking of pulling it back more where theres less boost/rpm to see if i can get little more juice!!! hehe

i know this probley seems a little off topic :P but for last year or two dreaming of finaly utiliazing the megasquirt for its purpose! and finaly building up a car that was a sleeping monster! this was surely a first step to world of tuning .... it was a blast the entire trip!

thanks to everyone!

i hope this inspires people to keep on trucking! and dont give up because of silly problems, ive had my share the hole time, lucky i figured them out for my self :P

BMW 84' 318I motor is a 1.8 litter 4 banger M10 , forged internals, head is stock re-man, with all new valve train, custom manifold i built for turbo holding the t4/t3 turbo, with 3" downpipe all way to back with a tiny muffler :P

way to go !

i'm doing the same journey as you, right now I'm in the stage of tuning MS2 in my BMW e30 325i m20 6 banger 2 valve rightness :)

i reckon you can advance timing until you get detonation. then retard it by say 5 degrees, just to be safe. ten to get even more power incerase boost and setup up water injection :)

word up!!! today i went home at lunch grab my bimmer and do little editing on ignition map, i pulled it back a lot im doing 25~30 degrees in > 4 psi , then when hitting 10~12 psi im at around 25 degrees, when i peak at 14 psi im 20~22 , doing that change made motor run totaly different!!! i added little more fuel in higher boost areas , 11.5 AFR that seems help out the little bit sputter i was getting, i notice at 4500 rpm boosting, im leaning into 12.5's , u sorta feel car sorta sputter nothing to intencse, i need richen it up!!! ive been watching my dutycycle to make sure im not over driveing injectors, im peeking at 70% theses are 42lb 440 cc injectors , base fuel presure is set to 36 psi, and its one those boost reference types 1:1 ratio, so im figireuing im probley hitting close to 55~58 psi when at 14 psi boost, i dont know if my stock new pump can keep up yet!!! but i keep my eye glued to that AFR makeing sure it never gose lean .....

over all its to much fun to drive, i "crap" in my pants every time i open her up, i swear i never felt a car in 5th gear pulling that hard, its sure worth the time and investment ive put into this beast, that RFL blow off valve sure is really f***ing loud, more then my exhaust....

on side note i notice i needed to push more advance when cruseing, around 36 ~ 40, this seems help out the little bit of st utter i was geting before, im starting think my VR pick up aint exactly on TDC, i have no way to check because theres no reference marks on the pully or timing case (dough should done that with motor out) ....

i think i already said this, over all its to much dam fun to drive hahah its like a full size gokart just stump on the gass and vroom ur off , gota watch out for that dam POO POO now , they want take my car away from me :(

oh dude, it sounds so exciting :)

yeach, over 10psi boost you should be running 11.5, under 10 posi, 12.0:1 should be ok.

i concerned about your timing. first of all get timing light and veryfy yout timing is right at 1k, 2k, 3k and 4k rpm.

i owned turbo car before and yes, i know how great the turbo feel on high gears is....

oh well... all the best. i'm finalizing my ms install tonight and from toomoro ownards hard out tuning until i get it right ! (or damage something god forbid!)
