LS1/LS2 coils dwell limiter question

Post by turbodog »

In the megamanual section on the LSx coils, it is stated that the coils self-limit dwell to about 8 mS. Has anyone tested and verified this? It seems line a somewhat complicated task. Correct me if I'm wrong, but to do this, the coil would have to "know" the current engine RPM, predict the timing of the next spark event, and only enable coil current flow ~ 8 mS prior to that predicted spark event. Please let me know if I'm overlooking something obvious here.

The reason I ask is I want to use these coils in both my Megasquirt project bike, and a second, carbureted bike. I wanted to use the stock TCI to trigger the LSx coils to improve spark energy. However, Yamaha was very sloppy with their dwell in this TCI. Coil current is basically 'on' for 1/2 crankshaft revolution, then off when the spark is due, remaining off for the next 1/2 crankshaft rev. If the LSx coil truly self-limits dwell, this should be no problem.

Thanks for listening!
