what are you using for a "coolant" temp sensor and how are you running it? i thought that maybe oil temp would do nicely, but im sure it operates at a higher temperature than coolant.
anyone got any ideas?

Not a VW person <hawk, spit> but I am an airhead...

I've obtained a CHT sensor off an injected VW 411 - If you're in the US, this should be a lot easier than here in the UK.

Originally, I was thinking along the lines of an oil temp sensor in one rocker cover or an IAT sensor in one heat exchanger, but I think this is going to be the best way forward - everything else is "one-step-removed". The oil temp *could* go higher, but that's irrelevant, because you set the numbers appropriately (unless, of course, the sensor melts... <grin>) - The bigger consideration is that it'll warm up very slowly compared to coolant or cylinder head temps.

So since you've got that sensor, where do you have it reading off of?

A buddy of mine has a Honda inline 4 bike that's aircooled and he's getting pissed because of all the trouble's he's had sync'n the carbs (1 per cylinder), and I'm about to suggest the MS to him, but I don't know what he'd use as a coolan temp guide. Maybe solder it to a cylinder head?

Currently? It's reading off, erm, err, the inside of a jiffy bag in the spare bedroom... Next to the ECU.

The plan is to fit it to the head fins, though. It's an ally head, so probably trim a fin or two and solder or braze a nut in.

I'm in the process of reworking the MS using EGT probes for my "off road"
Continental powered vehicle ;-]
Unfortunately its on the same pile as work and a few other projects.

EGT probes are the only way to get the equivalent of the 02 sensor. Same
probe more or less actually. CHT's are longer
term probes because of the mass of the cyl head. Ie if you run too lean and
have a hot mixture as a result then
the CHT won't detect it until the head heats up or the cylinder. And that
will be long after damage is done. EGT's
measure the current temp of the exhaust so it is much more accurate and
faster as a result. Best place for EGT
is right at the flame front in the exhaust pipe. This can be seen as the
color change on the surface of the exhaust pipe
right neat the head. If you get it hot enough the flame bit is glowing and
the end of the flame it stops.

well, this is for a motorcycle and i will still be having a o2 sensor. i was just curious cause i thought you had to have some sort of temp sensor to begin with.

Are you talking about the temp sensor for cold start enrichment? If so then
I goofed and was on about the wrong thing ;-]
For that I was going to ue a cht probe under the sparkplug.

I JB-Welded a temp sensor to a cylinder fin as a
temporary 'test'. Works well.

I'll have a better more permanant adapter machined
this winter.
