Two easy ways to tell if the clutch is slipping:

-Use the brake at the same time, and at peak torque in high gear, vary the engine load and maintain the same vehicle speed. Watch for RPM changes independant on vehicle speed changes.

-Take it for a spirited drive! Stop right after driving it hard ...

Beware of your temperatures. I now do ALL of my EMS tuning at a place in Boulder that has a 35 mph fan setup in a closed booth where I don't have to put up with the fumes. It's poetry in motion! You can cool of the coolant AND intercooler in a minute or two! The place is called Super Rupair.

Once ...

Unfortunately most of the literature on the internet is either a) incorrect, b) a matter of opinion or c) badly repeated and out of context. My source of knowledge is people in the industry (manufacturers, works teams) and books such as the Bosch Automotive Handbook (priceless, I highly recommend ...

Actually, I use my own controller, not the megasquirt. I have a buddy that's getting his master's in control systems. I have a 3D map that outputs a PWM signal. I then use a home-grown PWM to linear stepper motor to convert to EGR position.

I'm not done with it yet. There are definitely kinks to ...

I was hoping for a publication you could show me. It's a fascinating discussion regardless!

Why would the Ford WRC lead engineer be concerned at all with cats? He must have done factory cals before the race team?

Please correct me if I'm off here, I haven't tuned with cats in the car. Here's how ...

Can I ask where you get this information? I'm not being aggressive at all, I simply want to learn.

Blowing out the spark is a function of spark strength, compression, VE and boost pressure (and probably a couple I missed). What I'm trying to say is it's highly engine-specific. You might want to entertain the notion of a stronger ignition system if it sounds like a misfire.

1 degree per psi is a ...

...Compression is definitely one factor, but not the only one. You can have impressive compression and boost and not be knock-limited. Examples include the S2000, 3S-GTE and quite a few high-flow EGR Volvo engines of late. As a result, making generalized compression ratio statements have also been ...

If the engine was tuned for 87 octane and if it wasn't detonating, then putting higher octane in the engine will REDUCE the engine's performance in most every way (mileage and peak power/torque).

I have read this thread through a couple times and find it very valuable. It is helping me solidify some of my tuning beliefs, but I had a question about the above statement.
Fantastic questions! I will answer them as well as I can.

Doesn't knock/ping happen when your combustion temps/pressures ...
