I'm soon going to be wiring up my Microsquirt to a RS2000 16v engine fitted with throttle bodies which is in a kit car. This engine as standard runs an EDIS4 unit with 2 plug top coil packs. Looking at the Microsquirt wiring diagram for EDIS connections all looks simple enough, but there's a 25uf capacitor/suppressor from the power in to earth.
My questions are:-
1/ Can I assume this is already part of the original Ford setup, or does this need to be added?
2/ And if so, is this a general earth (as in connected to the nearest engine/chassis part) or does it need to go back to the Microsquirt earthing point on the engine?
I'm on my phone so I can't be sure, but I'm thinking it's part of the EDIS wiring. Assume nothing with a kit car - rummage around until you lay hands on it.
I haven't put the ford ignition loom under scrutiny yet, but I was assuming if there was one it would part of the ign coils and not obvious.
Would it matter if I added one anyway? In other words would 2 be detrimental?
Ok - a little digging later ... The cap should be part of the Ford coil pack wiring, perhaps physically bolted to the pack, but is not actually part of the coil pack. It's a small grey rectangle (Ford p/n F6AF-18801-AA), and is apparently absolutely essential to the clean transmission of the PIP signal. It should be wired between the pack's +12v pin and ground (cyl head or block), and should be as close to the pack as possible.
Adding a second cap would not I believe cause any difficulties.
Hmmm.... Don't think I've got one of those. It's a bit odd, not like the later mondeo setup with the square block with the HT leads coming out of it. This has 2 coil packs and on the bottom of each is a plug cap. And on the top another HT lead comes out for another cylinder. So it's 1 and 4 and 2 and 3 with a lost spark.
I bought the engine off of eBay and it came with the ecu and engine loom (conveniently cut into bits). I'll be creating my own loom from the ashes of the original, but as yet not found said grey capacitor. Would this maybe have been something like a tagged block screwed down near the EDIS unit with a fly lead into the loom sort of thing? Bit like the old after market suppressors you could put on Dynamo/Alternators.
Not allowed to post ebay links, but it really is a good source fir pics. I found these after a quick search - the first is an EDIS-6 coil pack, with the cap in the top right, while the second is the cap itself.
Ah-ha, sort of like I had imagined. My dilemma now is ..... Should I source a Ford F6AF-18801-AA or would an electrolytic 25uf capacitor do?
I might have dived off the deep end accusing the person who sold me the engine of cutting up the loom...... What I actually have is a complete Engine loom and an EDIS unit chucked in with the remains of a loom attached. What I couldn't work out is how I had 2 EDIS plugs....... Doh.

Electrolytics do funny things with changes in temperature, and it gets hot under the hood. The heavy film caps in this range are $10-20.
There's a used item on EBay right now for $15; a post from last year in another forum suggested they could be had from a Ford dealership for $22. You can probably get one for the price of a Happy Meal at the local U-Pull wrecker's yard. Go with the actual part.
