MicroSquirt.com read only forum (Jan.15,2018)

Hi,

I'm currently installing a microsquirt v3 on a ktm 450 single and i'm just doing the wiring now and could do with a check whether i have done it correctly.

We have a vr sensor on the crank and a bosch 124 module. I have wired the vr1+ and vr1-(coaxial cable) straight to the microsquirt with no resistors. The bosch 124 is wired like in the quickstart manual, but with ignition output 1 wired to pin 5 of the bosch module along with 12v and a 1k resistor between the 12v and the ignition 1 ouput.

We're using a stock ktm coil which is then fired off the bosch 124.

Is this correct?

Do I need to add resistors to the vr sensor input to the ecu and if i run it without a resistor could it cause damage? also is the bosch 124 actually compatible with a vr sensor?

I hope you realize that the stock KTM coil is a cdi unit. You need a coil for an inductive ignition system, about 3 ohm primary resistance.

That would work, but it might be a lot cheaper to find something like a VAG / Audi 'smart' COP. You can find new ones on eBay for under $20, and another ECU carries the connectors for EUR4 each. I think an actual link would get me scolded, so google "another ECU vag connector", and it'll get you to the piece you want.

Actually, there's even a few listings for COP and connector combined - search on ebay for "audi coil connector". That should save a bit on shipping!

Just seen this, but yeah in the mean time I had come to the same conclusion. So i've started looking at the different possibilities, such as toyota celica cops and he VAG ones.

as a stop gap though, does anyone know of a small inductive coil that could be used?

also has anyone got a sure fire way of checking the timing on a ktm? It has a small window for checking the oil level and the flywheel can just about be seen. /so i'm hoping to put a mark on the flywheel and the fw cover to try an get a rough base timing.

Finally does anyone have a base map for a ktm 450? the us came with a generic base map, but needs re-scaling for our rev-limit.

I hate to suggest this now, but wouldn't TuneECU* be better for your application, unless there is a specific reason (software & capabilities) for using a MicroSquirt. I don't have access to a KTM 400, but re coil for sparks, there is one here in the USA with a built in ignitor, but it's pricey.

* I didn't realise it doesn't work for the 450 models, just checked.
