How to Wire Sequential Twin Spark ignition?

Post by Harley1 »

Hi guys,

I would like to know what is the best way to run Sequential twin spark ignition with Microsquirt.
Engine: Supercharged, 2 cylinder, converted to Twin Spark

I originally thought I could use an external coil drivers and run 2 dual output coils for each cylinder:

But I understand due to the cylinder pressure the "flyback" voltage may be to high?

Is this an option: Found HERE

and if so, can this be wired directly to the Microsquirt, cop's with inbuilt ignitors?

I plan on running dual spark cam and crank sensor:

Any ideas or suggestions much appreciated.

Just got your PM, but I'd use two paired ignitions as in the first diagram. Works for a Citroen 2CV, countless other car set ups, which have 4 way coil blocks arranged in a 2 x 2 set up. Not sure about flyback voltage, but I use 2 x twin ended coil packs on my GTS1000 & YZF1000 engines no issues re sparking etc, which is the same as a two cylinder twin plug set up. I have also use a four way ignition driver paired into two inputs & two outputs, which is another option.

Set up shown last pic will run sequential. no probs.

Hope this helps
Mike

PS Working on other stuff at the mo, so PM is the best way to get hold of me, as not visiting the Forums regularly.

Thanks for the reply 24c!

I just realised that my first diagram may be a little confusing due to my plug numbering, I will remove the plug #'ing... This means that one dual output coil will fire both plugs in one cylinder, unlike a wasted spark set up... is that clear? I've not found any info on the net that runs coils like this...

Funny you mentioned a 2cv, cus thats what i'm using it on

With a name like Harley, I thought it was for those asthmatic V twins ;)

Twin plugging a 2CV is no different to twin plugging a Panhard engine, using two 2CV coils. I shall be doing one of those in a few weeks, and the French guys have been doing this for years with their DBs.

I don't like the coils wired in series; that gives them only half the voltage. I'd probably use logic level coils triggered by a 5 volt signal - IGN-1As, LSx coils, Toyota 1ZZ coils if you need a pencil coil design could work.
