No RPM but do have TACH OUTPUT??

Post by jaeger22 »

Hi, I am a newbee and I am stuck. Please help! I don't seem to be able to get a RPM reading, as in no gauge reading on TS, but if I put a scope on the TACH OUTPUT (Pin 35 Green/red wire) signal I see a nice clean pulse at the right rate. So it seems like the CPU is seeing the input and generating the tach out but calculating zero RPM. I have tried every possible set up option I can think of but no joy.
Here is my set up. MicroSqurit V3.0, running V3.77 SW. TunerStudio latest version and registered.
The target is a 2008 Suzuki DR650 single cylinder motorcycle. I am going for fuel only, at least for now.
I have CLT, IAT, TPS, and MAP hooked up and all read fine.
I tied the VR1 inputs to the OEM VR output signal that drives the CDI ignition system. (I tried reversing them but no help) Key settings: I set the crank wheel teeth to 1, skipped teeth to zero. Rising edge. I also tried 2 teeth, no change, and zero teeth, lost tach output signal.
One unusual aspect of this bike is that there are actually two teeth and both are very long, like 2" for the first, a ¼” or so gap and then about 1 1/2 " for the second. The result is that on the VR input there is a short positive pulse (about .8MS at idle) from the leading edge for the first tooth, then it returns to zero for about 4 MS, and then a short negative pulse from the trailing edge of the first tooth, followed very quickly by a positive pulse from the leading edge of the second tooth. And finally another negative pulse at the end. The point of all this is that there is really only one clean zero crossing, that being the gap between the two teeth, because at that point it goes from a negative pulse from the end of the first tooth to a positive pulse from the leading edge of the second.
Sorry for the long winded explanation but I was just trying to come up with a theory on why I have two teeth and only one tach pulse coming out.(which is what I want) But still no clue why I see no RPM reading.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
John

OK stupid operator error.I never set the # cylinders and he default is 8. I hadn't even looked at the injection set up because I was just trying to get RPM working first but the number of cylinders is set under injector set up.
Now I have RPM but very erratic, I assume due the VR zero transition issues with the long teeth. Have to re-think this. :RTFM:

Just a follow up because I see several others have had issues with getting a tach trigger in single cylinder motorcycles with the long tooth VR issue and CDI.
I tried an idea from a DR350 EFI write up on Thumper Talk (TT) Forum by msiddalingaiah. I wrapped about 12 turns of wire around the top part of the ignition coil core where it sticks out from the windings. I grounded one side and took the other to OPTOIN + and grounded OPTOIN -. I also had to set the number of crank wheel teeth to zero. This gave me a very nice trigger and good RPM that should work for fuel only. :D
I would still like to play with VR some more but that will have to wait.
