cam position sensor

Post by sn95.ohh »

Hey all ive been looking around but cant seem to find an answer.

I have a single cylinder KTM 560 smr that im looking at running a microsquirt on.

I have been looking into running a cam position sensor. Now my question is, can I just mount a magnet to the cam gear and mount a hall effect sensor to the housing and tell microsquirt to just fire the fuel and ignition everytime that magnet comes around?? I see everyone using missing tooth wheels I guess the benefit is that it allows more tuning options?? There isnt much room to add a missing tooth wheel thats why I would like to just add a pick up the cam gear.

If anybody has done this to a KTM motor before or has any suggestions that would be great! Thanks for the help.

The problem with single-point triggering is the loss of accuracy. Combine that with the lash in the cam drive, and you have loss of precision as well. A single-point cam trigger for phase works great since it doesn't need to be particularly accurate or precise, so long as the crank position can be well determined.

What does the stock crank position sensor and wheel look like?

Ok that makes sense. The problem is that I dont have much room for a trigger wheel on the cam.

There is just one pick up point on the flywheel that is used for the ignition.

Im sorry im new to all this but a crank sensor isnt much use on a single cylinder right??

Your stock black box is probably running the ignition off a single crank trigger, and ignition needs more accuracy and precision than fueling. Do a little digging, see what you have there.

Ya right now we are running a custom ecu one of our electrical engineers made a few years back as a senior design project and our fuel injection and ignition is run off of that single pick up point on the crank. So we have wasted spark and our injector is pretty much batch fire.

So what im thinking now is run a single point cam sensor and a crank sensor. That would seem to work right?
