I'm in the final stages of assembling my 92 Kawasaki ZX7-RR turbo motorcycle. The bike was originally carburated and is now set up with an old original Accel DFI computer and Hilborn injection.

My goal is to eliminate the entire electrical system and run a microsquirt in its place. If there is anyone who is interested in helping me figure out what is neccesary to do this conversion it would be greatly appreciated. I'm an engineer by trade, but do not have a lot of experience with F.I. systems per say.

My biggest challenge is determining whether I can eliminate the stock computer and CDI box as well as figuring out what type of ignition trigger to use. I also need a better understanding of what type of coil set up I need to use.

I'm located just outside of Detroit.

Your first concern is whether you are trying to use the stock triggering system. I have no idea what a ZX7 crank trigger looks like, but assuming it is a missing tooth set up, you should be able to use your standard coils and a wasted spark set up. I doubt you will have a whole missing tooth set up, so you will need to look at fitting a new crank based wheel.

Investigate your stock triggering system and post an update.

You need to determine if your ignition is TCI or CDI. You mentioned considering eliminating the "stock computer and CDI box"; were these separate units? If so, your ECU is probably putting out logic-level signals to th e CDI driver. In this case the uS can replace the stock ECU, and keep the CDI box and coils.

Note that the MS family is designed for TCI ignition, and doesn't play well with CDI coils without a driver box.

I'm mostly a mechanical guy. My ultimate goal is to completely strip the bike of all electrical wiring and start from scratch. Hence eliminating all stock components.

My main question is this: What components do I need (Besides sensors ect) to run this bike? Is the micro-squirt a stand alone system? or do I still have to use the CDI box?

I'm not against using new coils or anything else thats needed, as cost is not an issue.

Sorry for the ignorance in regards to this system, I just need to get a good start and I can take it from there.
