I see a lot of posts on fuel autotune, but nothing about spark autotune. Is it because nobody uses it? Or? By tonite I'll hopefully have my fuel map pretty close..then its time to go after spark. Running extra code 029s.

thanks

Autotune is for tuning a VE map and won't do anything for spark unless there is some voodoo magic I'm not aware of.

The only way to get a truly optimal spark map is on a steady-state dyno with a qualified tuner. There are several ways to get 'close', all of which involve some guessing or trial/error, but the dyno is the only real option if you want it just right. And not just any dyno... It must be a steady state load bearing dyno such as a Dyno Dynamics or DynaPack machine, or a Mustange, or several others.... An inertia dyno will not do the trick properly without the guesswork/trial and error so you're not much better than on the street.

Here's a thread with a calculator that may help you get a base map (that will still need dyno tuning to get it just right!).

I haven't used it on a car yet, but looking at the map it generated for my MR2 it looks close enough that it appears to generate a decent starting point at least.

Thanks Jerry. In the Tuning-SparkTable1 menu, you can turn autotune on directly...I had thought that meant there was a spark autotune (as it wouldn't make any sense to turn on autotune for fuel in the spark window, would it?).

So the autotune menu listing in the tuning-spark window either doesn't work, or actually activates autotune for the fuel map?

Turning on the autotune feature while looking at a spark map will almost certainly make a mess of the spark map.
Also the VE specific "generate table" makes a complete mess of spark.

Only use these features on the fuel VE tables.

Thanks James. Out of curiosity, if using those functions within the spark menus makes a mess, how come the option is there? Is it something in place for future? Just wondering..

So the bottom line is....never use "auto/generate" anything for your spark maps. Do it all manually. Correct?

I think the reason they are there is that the spark map display software is basically a copy of the fuel map display software. So the AutoTune and automatic generator are simply copies of the fuel software.
