Trying to start for first time but it dies

Post by scowman »

I can get it to start, but as soon as the IAC starts to close, it runs worse until it dies.

The exhaust looks really rich. How do i lean it out?

Can I attach files yet?

You have to go into the VE table and make the numbers smaller in the idle area, this will lean out your idle. In Megatune, click on the basic settings tab, and then click on Fuel_VE table 1. There is comprehensive help in the Megamanual. Hope this is the sort of info you are looking for.

Since it sounds like you're just getting it up and running for the first time, you may want to verify all fuel related settings, especially req_fuel. If all of the settings are ok, then I would do as newtyres1 suggested and adjust your VE values in the idle range.

Can you datalog the process so we can see what's happening?

I have read the manual and I still do not understand these initial cranking settings. They always speak in terms of pulsewidths, not rich and lean which is what I understand. They do not say which way to go from the default settings to make it richer or leaner.

Besides that, I have a VR sensor problem now.

I would appreciate it if you could look at that.

to lean it out you would want to decrease the pulse widths. you can idle on almost anything so experiment a bit but keep a few sets of plugs on hand in case you run into the problem where it wont fire at all (personal experience interjected)

Have you read this?
http://www.megasquirt.info/v22manual/mtune.htm

This quote from the manual might be helpful:
The cranking pulse width at -40°F should be about 3 to 5 times the 170°F value. To begin, set the -40°F cranking pulse width to about 88% of your "upper" req_fuel value, and the 170°F cranking pulse width to about 23% of your req_fuel. Those should get you 'in the ball park' for starting. (Once you have the engine running, you can tune the cranking pulse widths with small changes, moving them up or down together, and check it over a few days worth of starts before deciding which direction to go next.
Can you post your MSQ file and/or a datalog?

Thanks,
Robert

Yes I did read that. I do not see anywhere in there where it says that I should increase or decrease my cranking pulsewidths if I want to lean it out.

Please show me where I am missing this.

I have a VR sensor problem I cannot get passed anyway. Pulse widths are the least of my problems.

Not too happy with MS right now.
