Password Protection

Hi all,

How easy would it be to implement some kind of password protection? As in, lock down the maps in the ECU so only the tuner (for example) can access them? I'm doing various mapping services and megasquirt is one that I am doing for customers.. But I don't want other people to be able to steal my calibrations..

Is this a feature request? 8)

The firmware would need changing to support this more than Megatune.

It could probably be incorporated into the "version query" string. You'd modify the the .ini file for Megatune to send a different string otherwise the Megasquirt would not respond.

However, this isn't really in the spirit of open-ness that Megasquirt desires.

I have no issues with the ECU being open source, but if you pay someone to map it for you, then it is their intellectual property.. and it's fair for them to want to protect that..

If it's not in the spirit, then I assume the target of the Megasquirt project is to ensure that it's not used commercially? 8)

Being open source, you can do whatever you want with it. Don't expect many people around here to care much about adding password protection. The goal around here is to learn how to tune so you don't have to pay someone big $$$. 8)

From a customer's point of view, if I pay someone to produce a map for me, I would consider that to be MY intellectual property, and if I choose to share that with someone else, that's my business and no one else's and if that's unacceptable to the tuner, I'd take my business elsewhere.

It would be pretty much impossible to implement. I can read any MS processor in under a minute with a programmer and then locate all the maps that way, so just having a password for MegaTune would be pointless.

It is open source and to be brutally honest, Bruce, Al, Lance, Eric, James, Phil and others too numerous to mention have done a heck of a lot more getting the system to where it is today than you have mapping an engine. And in most cases no money has changed hands. So really you ought to be grateful for having been paid to do the last 2%

Also, if someone simply copies the settings they still won't have a perfect tune as their vehicle is unlikely to be exactly the same as the vehicle that was tuned.

PS. I'm pretty sure the flash can be protected so it _cannot_ be read by the MON08 reader though.

Every time you reply to one of my posts you show how ignorant you are. Please refrain from doing so in future.

That's all very well and good. When you purchase a copy of Windows, do you consider that your intellectual property? Do you consider MegaTune to be your intellectual property? Do you consider the code running inside your MS your intellectual property? No, didn't think so.

Did you buy megatune , did you buy the code running inside

Don't think so either .

I consider the password question the sickest post ever seen on the msefi forums .
Compeately and directly against the spirit and the goals of what megasquirt is all about .
If I were a mod , you 'de banned by now .

Oh and don't bother to reply , as far as I'm concerned , you don't exist anymore .
