Idle Advance Question

Post by 73Inka2002 »

Hi everyone, I’ve been fine tuning my ignition advance at idle to see if I can improve idle stability and smoothness. I started with 16 degrees since that was what I had my distribution set at before switching to EDIS. The idle was stable but wasn’t as smooth as I’d like (some misfiring, etc). I eventually determined that 13 degrees resulted in the best idle stability and smoothness, but it seems a bit low so I wanted to run it by the experts to ensure I wasn’t missing any obvious concerns with running so little idle advance. I don’t have an EGT gauge so I don’t know if reducing idle advance has increased internal temps.

Some additional info on my engine:
2 liter SOHC, 2 valves per cylinder (BMW M10)
Mild port and polish
292 degree cam
1 5/8” header
Max advance @ 100 kPa: 36 degrees
Idle speed: ~1050 – 1100 RPM

Thanks,
Robert

I run 10 degrees base timing, stock ignition used to run 6 degrees so you`ll be fine.
