MicroSquirt.com read only forum (Jan.15,2018)

My old laptop died, and the new one has no rs232 pot. I puchased an rs232/usb adapter, which must be installed with driver software. I know they will ask me what kind of device I will be linked to through the USB adapter. Can anyone here tell me what choice I should make here? How do I catagorize the MS computer? On the same topic, but slightly different tack, this computer does have an RS232 port for an external m onitor. Could this monitor port be used to link my laptop to the MS computer? This seems like a pretty major issue here, as most new lap tops do not have rs232 ports anymore. Some bright guy out there needs to figure this out. I am definately not that bright guy.

Serial devices are fairly standard. Generally picking all the defaults works when installing a USB/serial adapter, except as noted in this thread:

So read through that thread. In general, the comms set-up is handled mostly by MegaTune (baud rate = 115200 -MS-II, 9600 - MS-I, data bits = 8, stop bits = 1, flow control = none).

The external monitor port is most likely to be a three row SVGA connector, and has nothing at all in common with a DB9 serial port (other than a cursory physical similarity).
