im thinking of converting over to MS on my chevy 454 but i would like to run a distributorless ignition from a camaro. my question is, can i us MS to control 8 individual coils from a LS1. if anyone has any information on this i would greatly appreciate the help.

Using the MS1/Extra code
http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra
you could run those coils in a "wasted COP" arrangement. The coils are "logic level" which means they don't need a high current ignition driver chip to drive them.
The LS1 trigger disc is pretty odd, so you would be better fitting a standard wheel such as a 36-1. A number of aftermarket companies sell LS1 conversions to use these wheels in order to use Megasquirt and other ECUs.
I am unsure whether anyone has tried to do exactly this yet, but see no reason why it should not work.

To add;
Fitting a wheel to the damper cannot be done unless you have a woodruff key fitted to the crank and damper - which would entail removing the crank - so you might as well replace the GM wheel with a 36-1 anyway.
Â
I think the day that someone figures how to decode that GM wheel, will see a another big increase of megasquirt users, as the LS1 seems to be becoming the engine of choice for upgrades.

my 454 has a woodruff key fitted to the crank stock. thats how the balancer goes on. so are you saying all i need to do is get a 36-1 wheel with the sensor and run the megasquirt and spark with my individual coils.

Make sure that your trigger wheel is attached to the centre of the damper not outside the elastomer part or it will give somewhat erratic timing.
Both Eliot and I were somehow on the wrong track... You told us that you have a 454 then I start answering as if you have an LS1 ! Oops.

James ,
You might think that there is some movement because of the rubber ,
but if you research into what the damper is designed to damp you will
find that they are very high frequencies , around 5 to 7000 hz ,
the amount of actual movement is on the order of .1 degrees .
The difference between EDIS and the stock dizzy as far as
spark scatter is concerned is a night and day difference ,
the dizzy had as much as 4 degrees of scatter ,
the EDIS is rock solid stable , no discernable scatter at all .

Yes i have a 454. i can atatch the 36-1 rint directly to the crant and i can make a bracket to attatch the sensor to . besides the ring sensor edis8 modual and coils what other parts do i need. and how difficult is this to set up and get running. thanks for all the replys. all the information that i can get befor i start is/will be a great help.

0.1 degrees is better than I can tune to, so no problems then.
Once the trigger wheel and VR sensor are done the rest of EDIS is just wiring.
See:
http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra ... uneed.html
and also the links at the top for an MS1/Extra slant on things.

Also consider that it's known for the outside to shift considerably over time. Been working with matts tvr/rover v8, his outer damper (and hence the timing marks) were out by around 70 degrees!
I remarked my damper 3 years ago. Soon, when I fit a wheel to inner(!), I will re-check and see if its shifted since then.
