screen freeze

may not be right place to post but its when i am tuning so here goes.
driving along the road and lap top on within about 5 mins the screen freezes and comes up not responding then it wont shut down i have to hard boot the lap top .
tryed re installing software and still the same, is there a refresh rate or buffer i need to set???
i am also using a usb converter as laptops dont come with serial now a day s
i am tuning a turbo car so this could f**k thins right up
