MSII,EDIS, AND Knock-Sensing-retard

Post by tony2ltr »

I have a MSII setup with EDIS that I have been running on the bench, but I will finally be wiring it into the car next week.
1. If I want active detonation control with this setup, can I wire in the "Experimental" knock circuit from msns-e?
2. Is there any way I can add to this circuit so that it makes a jump in the coolant temp datalog like Boris' knocksense?
3. I have an all aluminum block, should I use a knocksensor from a similar sized, aluminum engine, or will a standard GM knock sensor work?

Yes, but it won't do anything. There's no software (yet) to handle knock. You can just log it.

I guess you could... it would be easier to log it by itself. There are instructions in MegaTune on how to do this.

I'm not sure that the block material matters. What I understand about knock sensors is that they're tuned to the cylinder dimensions. (The resonance of the cylinder, not the material around it.)

I just figured the metal would affect the way the sound is transmitted.

Is there any planning for knock retard for MSII?

Lance is bench testing it (version 2.53) now.

Wow that was a fast reply! It should work ok for first batch MSII right?

Put me on the list! What knock sensor does it use and what knock censor controler?

Thanks!

I thought the same thing, but if you think about it, the block will have no natural resonance that is meaningful when compared to all the other "noise" in the system.

Sure, the block will resonate... put it on a stand and whack it with a mallet and it will ring, but compare that tiny amplitude to the explosion in the cylinder! The resonance is determined by the dimensions of the cylinder and the sound is simply transmitted through the block.

so, using a knock sensor from an engine with a similar bore and stroke would be the best way to go then.

Anyone know what engines our there use a 3.530 bore?

2.x code will not work with the non-CAN MS II - there is not enough memory and the fuel pump and idle are on different pins. The best you can do is extract the knock retard code from 2.5 and put it in 1.3
