I just wonder whether you could use an inductive clamp like is found on a timing light to act as a tach signal or maybe a few coils of wire wrapped around the HT lead, like a simple kart RPM meter pick up? Obviously as your engine has a varied ignition advance built into the ignition, the crankshaft positional value would be changing, but maybe you could get a tach signal from this to drive the fuelling.

PS Never scoped this so I don't know what it'd produce.
