Something else you might try is the loopback test (to see if the serial port is still working). To do this, you jumper pins 2 and 3 on the cable end, and use hyperterminal (or mini-terminal under Communications in MegaTune, this is much easier) to see if characters you type are echo'd. We have tried two seperate laptops, laptop "A" with a serial port and latop "B" with usb to serial port adapter.
When communication ceased laptop "A" was in use and powered by ac adapter.
We could never get any response with laptop "B"

Another thing that can occassionally cause issues like yours is the serial cable plug not being fully inserted into the socket (it can seem to be in but not be fully seated), so you might want to check that too.
