How well does MS do in cold weather? I mean -40C for a week Canadian
type of cold weather. Anyone try it?

Yes, a number of people have run Megasquirt through the winter in
eastern Canada. Of course, the cold weather performance depends more
on your tuning abilities and the state of your battery than
MegaSquirt itself.

I was about to post a question on this subject. I have 91 740 Volvo turbo
and spent a considerable time tuning it this summer. As the weather got
colder it would start easily but die right afterwards. On a second or third
try it would settle down to good idle if I revved it just after start to keep
it alive. I don't like doing that to a cold engine. What to tweak?

Boris,

This usually indicates that the after start enrichment (ASE) needs
to be a bit richer. If it dies right away, increase the %, if it
runs for a few seconds then dies, increase the number of cycles by
about 25 or 50 (up to 254).

However, this assumes that the warm-up enrichments (WUE) are correct
(I'm sure yours are). If the WUE aren't quite tuned in, then the ASE
will need to be re-tuned after the WUE are changed.

You could try upping the prime pulse too - but I feel the prime
pulse should be no longer than 5 to 7 milliseconds to keep from
potentially flooding the engine in hot weather (since the prime
pulse isn't adjusted for temperature).

It is a slow process, because you only get one really cold start a
day, so it takes a while. And it's hard to remember what you've
tried from day to day (for me at least), so taking notes is a good
idea.

Boris it sounds like perhaps your warmup enrichments and afterstart
enrichment are off a little bit.. I'd play with those first.

I was just making sure that the hardware could take the cold so I
could use it all year round. Thanks!

I've run the MS daily through two Canadian winters with no problems. I don't recall the component low temp limits, but I'd guess they are at -40C at least. I can only hope that's low enough for you where you're at!
