Ignition only installation as start?

Ignition only installation as start?
I'm at the beginning of installing the MS3 to my Honda NTV 650 (twin engine).
Since the ignition setup from Honda is quite "special", I was wondering if it would be possible to set-up MS3 first to drive the ignition with the carburettors still installed?
In this way I'm 100% sure that my ignition settings are ok.
I know that the fuel part first would be more logical but the ignition worries me the most.
Is the possible/advisable with MS3?
Regards
Re: Ignition only installation as start?
I'm working on a very similar project, a 1993 Suzuki GSF400 Bandit.
When I call them similar I'm mainly referring to the fact that both bikes present a fuel injection hobbyist with a very challenging "packaging" situation. It's hard to judge which of our two motorcycles has less space to install the necessary fuel injection system components. In these pictures it seems that your NTV might have a more fairing space than my GSF but your V-Twin engine definitely takes up more of the available space in the "fore-to-aft" direction.

I know from experience that Hondas tend to be pretty tightly packaged, so when I read your post the first thing I noticed was your mention of "installing the MS3" on your Honda NTV 650. Did you mean to say "Microsquirt V3"? I ask this because the MS3 is a really big box to try to hide under a small motorcycle's fairings.
To get enough space for all the fuel injection components I've decided to change my GSF's seating by putting a solo cowl in place of the rear seat. This will allow me to relocate the bike's battery to that spot which will leave space for the addition of a fuel pump. Also under the solo cowl will be the Microsqurit V3, the Innovate LC-2 Wideband O2 controller and the necessary relays and etc.
Re: Ignition only installation as start?
Behind the seat / above the tail light is a small compartment which is more then big enough to house the MS3. So this will be the place for the MS, away from external influences like rain etc.
For my throttle bodies, I use the ones from the Suzuki SV650. In lenght they are aprox. the same as the carburators.
They needs some modification because the Zuk has computer controlled throttle valves.
Good luck with your project!
Re: Ignition only installation as start?
You didn't answer EWFlyer's question - are you using an MS3 (MegaSquirt3), or a MicroSquirt V3? This is a fairly important difference; these are very different units, with very different capabilities, not to mention the enclosure for a full-on MS3 is HUGE compared to a MicroSquirt, and not even remotely water-tight.

Of course it is, and in fact it'd be the best way to go first, in my opinion, as you are only making one change, plus all the issues you might have with noise etc will be discovered with the ignition side of the project, so injection should be plain sailing!racemier wrote: I was wondering if it would be possible to set-up Microsquirt v3 first to drive the ignition with the carburettors still installed?

PS You can use "Dual Spark" aka "Dual Tach Inputs" & your two original sensors if you change the trigger to a single tooth, but as your original 8-1 offers better resolution, I'd stick with what dontz125 said and disconnect the additional sensor.
Re: Ignition only installation as start?
Was planning to follow the advice of using 1 sensor
Will have more questions popping up when I'm making progress.
So if I understand correctly no sensors (temp, MAP, ) need to be connected, only 1 ign trigger sensor?

When you hook up TunerStudio to the MicroSquirt, you will notice when you do the cranking tests, that various unconnected dials will be jumping around. If TPS & MAP are moving around then the default values in the .msq will also be moving. It might be an idea to add the latter, because you will want to see this output. If it's jittery, this will affect your subsequent fuelling, so you have an opportunity to iron out any issues now.racemier wrote:So if I understand correctly no sensors (temp, MAP, ) need to be connected, only 1 ign trigger sensor?
