The story

Ive had this running for about 2 months and ive been making small changes to make it run better and better so ive been running 37 degrees under heaver loads like 2500-3500k up and 36 degrees under boost and its been running ok in part throttle and has been running really good under boost. the problem ive been trying to fix is the bike had no power unless in boost like 1st gear it just wouldnt go so tonight i was messing with the tune and i put the higher load timing at 49 degrees and i went to rev it in the garage after uploading and wow it revs like a rocket so i went for a ride around the block and wow man it has power in all gears now with out boost and i left boost timing at 36degrees. I went for a hard ride and came back and pulled the plugs and checked timing marks on plug straps they were right in the middle of the strap which is good.

The questions
Do these smaller engines take more timing???
How to tell what timing a engine needs???
Do you think 36degrees is too much in boost??

Issacson,

It is unlikely that the engine needs that much advance. See: http://www.megamanual.com/begintuning.htm#advance and http://www.megamanual.com/begintuning.htm#spark

However, if the trigger offset value isn't calibrated, then you may have to enter large values in the spark advance table to make the engine run right. To calibrate the offset, see: http://www.megamanual.com/mt29.htm#og

To comment in more detail, we would need an MSQ and datalog.

Lance.

I have a similar setup on a xj900 non-turbo. How did you wire the 420a coil? I have seen this coil used on other xj's on xjbikes.com forum. I'm using a single stock vr sensor with a 36-1 trigger wheel. I wired the 11 & 12 pins to the inputs to the outer two pins on the coil & the center pin on the coil to 12v. I currently am not getting any spark. I'm suspecting I wired this wrong?
