1998 yamaha r1 micro ignition question

Post by hybred »

converting my 98 r1 to microsquirt. finishing up the install. it has two coils (4cyl) wasted spark. has a vr sensor , it has 4 teeth sort of. 3 are small and the forth long. was reading where someone cut down the last to match the other 3. my other thought was to see if it were possibly to run an 02 wheel (factory efi) that has 8 teeth. here's a pic... getting warm here in the N.E. :yeah!:

The B&G VR hardware does NOT like "long-tooth" wheels; the bike OEMs used to like edge-detection, while the various B&G versions are meant for zero-crossing detection. See a diagram about halfway down this page for the problems encountered.

If you can fit an 8-tooth wheel from another year, cutting one tooth off of that would probably be your best bet. The other option might be to use the wheel you have now with Matt_GSXR's "long tooth" patch to the MS2/Extra code; an adaptor circuit is needed. The code patch is here and the circuit can be found here; I don't know if the patch can be ported to the uS code - probably, but by someone a lot more code-savvy than I ...

Cutting off the long tooth of your current wheel would leave you with a 4-1 trigger wheel. This is the minimum for a 4-cyl, but it's a pretty thin minimum, especially for a high-revving powerhouse like yours. Trimming the long tooth back to a short tooth will leave you with a 4-0 wheel that won't actually provide enough info to the uS to accomplish anything. Unless you add a cam position sensor ...

thanks.. gives me some direction. going to buy the o2 crank wheel and go from there. seems the most logical choice. :RTFM:

doing some reading and i'm still lost lol.. anyway. here's a pic of the diagram of the 02 yami's set up. they went from wasted spark to cop when they switched from carb 98 to efi 02. using a cam signal also i am guessing.
#13 in diagram (curtsy of bike bandit) is the trigger wheel of the 02.

Looks like 8 equally spaced teeth; that can be used with a 1 tooth cam sensor.

Yup, the cam sensor is #31. Not sure how they did it with the R1s; the R6 cam sensor looks for a radial hole in the camshaft.

Like Matt says, you can go with an 8-0/1, or you can trim off a tooth for 8-1. You can do both - 8-1/1!

seems like a way to go. don't have cam sensor provision so ordering the 2002 wheel will be what i'll do. probably just remove a tooth. thanks .. getting closer...
