Yamaha Vmax with MicroSquirt

Post by aniimsaj »

Hello,
I am going to put Microsquirt (already purchased) to My Vmax this winter. Is there anyone who has already done it? If not Could someone help me a little bit?

My Vmax model year is 1986 and it has four pickup coils.

Question 1:
If I first try only fuel. How do I connect those four independent pickups to MicroSquirt Or should I only use one of those and which one? Or is it possible to use those at all and perhaps using simultanously squirting?

Question 2:
Second phase I will also include ignition. Do I need a trigger wheel like 36-1 then or might I use also those four stock pickup coils?

Someone said that stupid questions don't exists... :)

For fuel only you can use the coils to provide a tach signal for MS. Just do fuel first and leave the ignition stock. Then once you get the fuel right, have a look at ignition.

The VMax was discussed a lot some time ago, I can't find the thread, I think the conclusion was that it runs like 2 oddfire twins side by side with a timing offset between each pair (a pair is front/rear cyl on LHS and front/rear on RHS). I don't think the oddfire code can work with 2 oddfire twins running with an offset. I could be wrong though. To be sure though, draw or mark the ignition events on a 720 degree scale and see if 2 ignition outputs can somehow run the engine, wih wasted spark maybe or whatever. In Microsquirt, you can dial in an offset between the two ignition outputs. In MS2Extra, you could maybe ask the developers for help, but they will need the drawing of cylinder firing on the 720 degree scale, plus you will need to supply a drawing of the stock sensor wheel or mount a generic wheel like 36-1 on the crank plus a cam sensor or just a missing tooth cam wheel. I think it's a 75 degree twin so wasted spark is probably out of the question.

Hi,

Thanks for the clear explanation! Now I am definetely sure to do fuel first!

Anyway when I fueling it first, to where and how I connect sync signal from coil to MicroSquirt. Is one coil enough? Could you perhaps draw it to my word attachement. I cannot know how much to thank you for it!

2 coils would be better, there are diagrams at diyautotune.com I believe, I'll see if I can find a link.
