More odd fire (V6 this time)

Post by karlo »

I've noticed the recent addition of the dual spark option. I have an odd fire Maserati V6 engine, which from the factory has two coils and a distributor with twin rotor and points (it's essentially two distributors rolled into one, a delightful mess). The engine has since received electronic ignition with dual optical sensors (again, one for each bank/coil).

The independant dual ignition option in dual spark mode seems to be almost exactly what I need to control spark. The code does not yet support 6 cylinders, but it seems to me that's just a matter of a small code change, or is there something I'm missing that precludes this?

I can't confirm yes or no at this stage but I could try to simulate this on the bench if you want. I've only tested for 2 cyl oddfire, not sure what will happen if we add some more ignition events...in your case you still only need 2 spark outputs if you keep the 2 coils and twin dizzy.

Thanks for the input! I put some more thought into it, and I'm guessing I can make it work by pretending that it's an odd fire two cylinder engine. With three times as many ignition events, MS will think it's running at three times the real RPM, but that's not really that important to me at the moment (looks like modifying Rpm_Coeff should fix that in the code).

Should work, yes?

If you can get the rpm right, I can't see why it wouldn't work with a dizzy (or 2 in your case), using a cam wheel for triggering so there's no wasted spark.

More odd-fire

Post by injuhneer »

I too have the Maserati odd-fire V6 (1972 and 1973 Citroen SMs).

I have moved my ignition away from the dual point single distributor Marchal setup and now have a Petronix hall-effect sensor with a custom odd-fire reluctor.

My interest is less in ignition and more in supporting the fuel pulse for an odd-fire engine.

I will wander off from here and search the site on previous discussion but am interested in any input or comments of supporting an odd-fire engine. The main reason is the spare 2.7l V6 I have and am planning to turbo or supercharge the engine on rebuild.

Hmm...

Looks like I might be on my own on this project.

I did find a video on YouTube of a guy who 'Squirted a PRV odd-fire V6 in his DeLorean.
