Ignition Advance How TO

Post by Speedster »

Hi,

I got my ACVW to fire up on my MS-II, V3 with relay board and was attempting to tune the enrichments when I decided to check the ignition advance. My timing light showed no advance from the base setting of 7 degrees, regardless of RPM. MegaTune shows ignition advance, but I understand that this is a calculated figure and bears no relation to whether the actual advance is working.

After spending several hours searching the posts, I found some references to Trigger Angle being set to 0 degrees and the Fixed Angle needing to be set to -10 degrees for the Map, or there would be no spark advance. Despite my search efforts, I could not find out where to look for these parameters. Are they in MegaTune or the car specific configuration? I am using MegaTune 2.25b688beta.

I also do not have a 1K pull up resistor installed, and am confused as to whether or not I need it in my installation.

Any guidance? :?

Some more reading led me to the article "Ignition Control with MegaSquirt II" wherein was the diagram for the pull up resistor. Maybe installing it will give me some spark advance. If not, let me know.

In Megatune go to Spark, chose Spark settings. In the popup window you will find Fixed angle. This should be set to -10

Megatune Spark Button?

Post by Speedster »

Thanks Tommy,

I may be overlooking something completely, but my version of MegaTune 2.25 does not have a Spark button. All that I can find under Settings is Ignition Settings, which does not contain a Fixed Angle category. I may be overlooking something.

Also, the MS-II assembly manual states that if I am not using the IGBT high current driver circuit, (I am using EDIS-4), then just jumper JS10 to IGN, and do not install the pull-up circuit since the processor port has one enabled already at 5 volts. Then, the article "Ignition Control with MegaSquirt II" states that if I am not using the high current circuit, then I need to install the pull-up resistor circuit. Which is it, or am I just confusing matters, which is likely.

AHA! Found the answer to spark advance!

Post by Speedster »

:D Now I know why I was not able to get any spark advance. The cable wiring instructions that I used specifically stated not to connect a wire between pins 36 between the relay board and MS DB-37s. So, I did not!

The specific instructions for EDIS state that the SAW signal comes out of MS-II on DB-37 pin 36 to the relay board pin 36. Since I first started the car a week ago, the motor has been running in Limp Home Mode, because there was no SAW signal.

This should cure the spark advance issue. Now, about that pull-up?????
