msd 6a, neccesary???

Post by shnitzel »

my car is a turbocharged 1.8L honda motor, very backyard modified, lots of good parts...

anyhow, with the new MS controlled sparkmaps i pulled out all my old msd boost timing control and whatnot...

now i also have a '88HO 5.0L in an rx-4 that has the MSD timing computer which requires the 6A. as ive stated before, im a cheapskate and this is the same ignition ive ran on every car for about 15 years... and id like to keep it a complete running unit.

reading about the 6a, it doesnt seem to do much other than multiple sparks under about 2000 rpm...

so, can i just exclude it from the system, run a big aftermarket coil straight off my MS and expect good results???

The MSD box (or other capacitive discharge units) may well give a stronger spark, however with your cheapskate intentions certainly start out with the big coil method.

I know of someone who swapped from an MSD to wasted spark using stock Ford coilpacks on a V8 and noticed to difference (better or worse.) That's only one datapoint on a different engine, but hey, better than nothing.
