ve table help

Post by sokufactory »

right i have ms and edis running my 1600cc 4age turbo
it has 450cc/min injectors and should run 14-16psi
the car idles great and drives ok going slowly.. but i really dont know which way to go on tuning when on boost.. as i only have a narrow band o2 sensor. i made the map from scratch so really wouldnt have a clue if its on the right track or not.. and now i tried to generate a ve table from the calculator and it gives me ve bins of up to 300 when on boost.. but the MT says cant have greater than 255.. ?? and i had been reading that the bins wont go much above 150.. even on turbo engines.. im confused..
my req fuel is 9.0 and this is my ve table is

I think the best thing to do is get a buddy you trust to drive, and sit in the passenger seat and just tune away. the narrow band o2 is pretty good as long as its hot. Your required fuel seems a little low, thats probably why your ve is so high. My required fuel from the calculator was 17.5 but im at 21.8 now with my highest ve being 110.

Yeah, I agree - get a mate to sit in the car with you, and just drive while he/she does the adjusting. I took a mate in my car, and it took about 30 minutes with a narrow-band O2 to get a useable map - certainly I've done two rallies (one forest, one tarmac) with it, and it's not missed a beat - much better than the carbs. Just drive in a particular area, and knock the VE down until it's lean, and then put it up a bit - more in the high speed/load areas, as mentioned in the manual. Obviously it's better if you do it with a WB sensor, but you can certainly get a half-decent map with a NB sensor.

basically im stubborn and i want to do it all myself. so im just driving and then dataloggin.. its slowly gettign better. exhuast popping when map about 20 would mean to lean right? like when in gear coasting down a hill..
at the moment ive driven up to 4psi and datalog shows quite an erratic afr of around 13.. this shold be 11-12 right? its just the exhuast temps are still quite high even now that ive put my timing up quite high. 35deg off boost set to go to 25deg at 15psi.

I was also stubborn, doing everything myself. It took me ages to get the MAP reasonable as I'd do a bit, then alter it, and so on. Driving with a buddy is much better, 'cos firstly you can concentrate on driving the car (not crashing it, and keeping it on the right revs/MAP), and secondly they can dial in changes instantly and you can feel the benefit.

As for the popping in the exhaust, it depends on your idea of popping - mine does that, and it's 'cos it's too rich - I've still yet to set it so it won't deliver as much fuel when on the over-run. Popping in the exhaust can be rich or lean, but it depends on the sound - I know what rich sounds like, but only through experience - I'd describe it as more of a burbling sound than a popping one. I also believe that EGO sensors don't work too accurately in these conditions as there may be unburnt fuel burning in the exhaust, etc.

i'm using 450cc/mins injectors on my toyota 3Tc turbo too and run a resistor pack thru it. the req_fuel i have from the generator is 7.3 and the max VE bin is roughly 240. i did shift the whole table by "10" and make the max 240 KPa and 8000RPM i have the bin value of 250. i think by the way i'm doing this it i am on the safe side cos it will run the engine a bit rich. btw, i don't have any WB o2 but i do have a NB o2 and will do some low load tuning out of it
