Which ignition pack to use.

Post by BBLongman »

Currently collecting the bits together for a couple of MS projects. One will be EDIS8 and the other using MSII to drive an ignition pack directly.

Which ignition coil packs are the best to go for or does it not make much difference? Ford seem to be the most popular (and attract the most bids on ebay!) whereas there are plenty of other 4 way ignition packs for other models that seem to get overlooked.

Any guidance appreciated,

Ben

Ford coilpacks are easy to find in scrapyards and dirt cheap. (Say £5 per coilpack or less.)

PS. MS2 doesn't yet do wasted spark on its own - it requires EDIS or GMDIS.

I would choose based on the cleanest or easiest install or special concerns for the project. Chrysler (neon type) is a fav for its simple terminal connects and flat base. Ford is easier to route if both plugs are on the same bank but the terminals are a bit more of a pain and they don't sit 'flat' on a surface - although they have a bit smaller footprint. GM is fine on all counts but needs modding to drive directly. Individual and waste spark coils from bikes and snowmobiles can be adapted easily for use with EDIS or Extra...

Lots of options out there!

Didn't realise that MSII didn't do ignition directly. Is there any MS set up that will control ignition directly?

The reason I ask is the second project is to inject a classic bike (ariel sq4)and there is nowhere really suitable to mount the trigger wheel for EDIS. I wanted to use the distributor to trigger the ignition via MS.

Re. coil packs I think I'll toddle off down to the yard for the coil packs then sounds like it might be cheaper than ebay.

MS1/Extra or MS2 will control a single coil for distributor use.
MS1/Extra will also decode a trigger wheel for direct control of wasted spark or coil on plug. See my sig i.e. http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra

(MS2/Extra hopefully coming soon will do wasted spark on the MS2 platform.)
