Do some Google Searches :

"Gasoline Properties" "Mixture Turbulence" "BMEP"

"Flame Travel" "Flame Propagation" "14.7" "Internal Combustion"

I used to have book by David Vizzard that was excellent ,
you could try asking for his books in a book store , also
"Smokys Power Secrets" or any of the books by "SA-Design" .

This is a STEEP learning curve if your completely green ,
you'll have to do alot of reading .

Then once you get the technical knowledge down , you get to
find out how it works in the real world , not to mention learning
how to automatically figure "Fudge Factors" in your head and all
of the various interactions going on .

By the way Ignition Timing is also very important , especially
when it comes to gas mileage and driveability .

Good Luck :)
