Is the IGBT Pull-Up Necessary With GM HEI 8-pin Modules?

Post by 69 1/2 Six Pack Bee »

I am going to upgrade my V2.2, MS-I with the daughtercard upgrade and am also adding another MPX4250 for real-time baro. corr. I am planning on using the small-cap HEI which has the 8-pin module and also the stock external coil.
Am I going to be able to fire the stock coil with my current setup?
Before I delve into a new V3.0 MS-II I want to see if I can master the art of 12x12 tables and the target AFR's!
I am starting to get my nerve up and I am ready to give it a whirl. I got the V2.2 running decent now and so I am ready for the next level!
Thanx,
Bud

Bud,

If you are going to use the 8-pin HEI module, you don't need to use the IGBT at all, you can run it straight off the MS-II processor pin (there's a resistor already in MS-II). I have been running this way for over a year with MS-II without issues.

However, if you decide to use the IGBT, then yes, you should use a pull up to a 5 Volt source on the board.

Lance.

Thanx, Lance.

I have had the MS-I running the standard HEI for over a year now without even a hiccup. This is in my family camper-carrying Chevy truck and had made the trip to Texas and back without even one issue. If I feel confident enough with this system enough to use it in this type of non-experimental application then that must say something for all of the research that has gone into the design of the Megasquirt. Reliability isn't even a concern because of the overall simplicity of the design not to mention the layout of the components. Now the new 4-layer board is even more of a plus!

I must admit that when I first contemplated even getting into this whole system I was all but aprehensive. But now that I have joined the rank and file "squirter's" this is all becoming just second nature anymore. With all of the support here and the fantastic responses we get with our queries one should not hesitate to join in.
I am anxious to see what transpires on the horizon and hopefully will be around for the duration.
Thanx again and to all of you "newbies", hang in there...you will enjoy the experience but be prepared for a sharp learning curve :)
