Problem sorted, engine now starts and runs (wahey!).
I hadn't connected OPTOIN- to ground, but i only found this out by searching the forum. Perhaps there should to be a new page on the manual for setting up microsquirt with EDIS or other ignition modules because the current one shows the pins the ...

Aha! - i found the page on logic-level jumper configurations so will check this first. Maybe this is causing the lack of a speed signal.
Could i have damaged the EDIS module if the jumper configuration was set for coil driving?
