Re: Motorcycle Ign pickup

no sorry thats a bad pic, the vr sensor is pointing out away from the crank shaft
There are two rows of magnets inside the rotor, the set further away from the camera are the ones that trigger the ign events and charge the 200v part of the stator
What you're saying is a bit confusing. Here's why ...

Re: Motorcycle Ign pickup

But if you're trying to control both fuel and ignition with the Microsquirt you will need a tooth pattern that the Microsquirt is programmed to interpret.

I can see from your pictures that your bike's "pickup" (the pulse generating sensor, more properly known as a "variable reluctance sensor") is ...

Re: Motorcycle Ign pickup

Are you trying to set up the bike "fuel-only" (no ignition control)? If that's the case then all you need is a tachometer type signal.

On my first motorcycle project (a Kawasaki EX-250) I did a fuel-only setup. I left the original rotor/stator and pulse sensor in place and the original CDI too ...

Re: Motorcycle Ign pickup

A picture of the bike's rotor would help. Does the bike's rotor have a tooth pattern that the Microsquirt can recognize? Usually people go with a "missing tooth" configuration.

For example: I'm working on a Suzuki GSF400. It doesn't use the rotor/stator end of the crankshaft for its tooth pattern ...

Looks like another one of those goofy Nippon Denso corp trigger wheels. Those guys are certainly marching to the beat of their own drum.

Re: Coolant Sensor locaton

here's a thought: there are a couple of parts producers out there who make Oil Temperature Sensor adapted Oil Pan Drain Plugs.

just a thought.

Re: No tach signal with Dina S ignition

Shouldn't this signal (Coil negative) be input to the Microsquirt through the OPTO circuit rather than the VRIN?

It's a square signal (digital), right? It's closer to what a Hall sensor delivers (1 or 0), rather than an analog signal like what a variable reluctance sensor generates.

Re: Coil ve-trigger setup

That all makes perfect sense. I didn't know the history of the issue.

I guess I have always had a problem of limited perspective on the issue, because I've only ever dealt with a fuel-only parallel twin. Nothing bigger or more complex. It never occurred to me that in fuel-only mode when you told ...

Re: Coil ve-trigger setup

Yes, this is true...

A flat plane 4 fires 'a' coil every 180°. For most Japanese bikes, in wasted spark it fires 1-4/2-3/1-4/2-3. For a sequential COP installation, it fires 1/2/4/3. Either way, you get 4 ignition events per engine cycle.

... but what I've been saying, what I was trying to ...

Re: Coil ve-trigger setup

I agree that a twin firing wasted spark should use a single branch of the diagram as shown. I disagree that a 4 should use the same schematic, but suggest instead that it use the diagram as indicated - that is in fact the service for which it was designed.

Matt was working on a 4-coil GSXR 600 ...
