My interest in MicroSquirt

Hey all,

Just thought I'd share my interest in MicroSquirt. I'm really keen on the idea of having an open-source ECU with open-ended development, but I'm not so keen on the idea of having to spend time soldering (I'd rather spend time playing about with the source). I love the fact that the MicroSquirt is so small using SMT components, AMPSEAL connector and a sealed extruded case, so for my situation this sounds like a killer combination!

Has a fully-featured (as in all pins presented through the AMPSEAL) SMT version of the MS2 been considered? I'd be interested to know how many other people share the same interests as myself!

I'm sure there's many who can't wait for uS to be released. It is very similar to MS2 except it can only run high-impedance injectors (or low-impedance with resistors) and it has 2 onboard VB921 coil drivers. It runs the same latest code as MS2. A standard MS2 can be modded to run identical to uS and take advantage of the 2 independent ignition circuits. Very interesting times, but early days right now.

Do you mean V3.0 mainboard? Supposedly an SMT version of the V3.0 board is in the works, unknown what connector that will have.....

Oh, as explained before in the other forum, I would like to see the Microsquirt soon, just to try it in my new adaptor board design. I think it will be a big hit with the bike guys, especially the Harley engined machines due to the dual independant ignition channels.

It's just great that uS has come out with independent ignition channels, what more could one ask for? besides MS2/Extra code : ) The Harley guys will need a "H-D tacho interface" for uS, it's a project begging for someone with the capabilities (machine shop/fabrication/possible electronics) to design and market. There's a couple of possible directions. Lining up 2 VR/Hall sensors accurately on a cam wheel with a 2" dia isn't easy for DIY'ers, but easy for a manufacturer. There is another way using a 2nd non-critical-placement sensor and keep the OEM timing intact, and use the 2nd sensor with some electronics to divert the OEM pickup alternatively to each of the 2 required uS input channels. I'm working on the 2nd method. Hope it works...I can't really wait around for someone else to do something! But I also have a day job that pays well enough and do not intend to market anything, but to share ideas and photos no problem. The H-D guys need to build an interface that isn't easy for the DIY'er, I hope someone steps up to help get lots of Harleys running...

Certainly I am confident in your abilities to find a solution to the Vtwin ignition problem using uS. I think you have the right Idea, hopefully there will be other interested party's willing to chip in some time and experiment with different setups to find the best solution. I don't think I'll be much help in this type of setup except for moral support.

Maybe I'm not thinking about the same system, but on my Blockhead, there is a cup thingie with two slots cut into it bolted onto the cam, with the pickup mounted on a plate behind it. I would assume it to be a VR type pickup. Certainly isn't optical. I haven't pulled the "not-points" cover on my wife's 883, but I would assume it to have a similar setup. Anyway, if you want full control with spark, why not just take one of those cup thingies and slot it so that the whole system acts like a 12-1 or something? You could use the stock pickup and just change out the cup thingie.

The 12-1 won't work for an odd-fire engine, only even-fire. There is odd-fire ignition control available in MSnS-E and it is experimental but I'm hoping that uS with the independent ignition channels will do the job nicely. Your wife's 883 should be the same as my Buell except with a different rotor, maybe the rotor is similar to the one on your Blockhead? The Sportster/Buell motor uses a Hall effect sensor, I thought the Evo would be similar but maybe not. I have a friend with one so might check his out. Right now I'll concentrate on the Buell/Sportster and when/if that works I can look at what other Harley's it will adapt to, hopefully an Evo 1340cc will be the same.

My Honda VTR1000 90 degree V-twin use a 12-3 ignition wheel not shure if it's hall or vr but if I remember right Harleys are 90 degree as well. I read that Microsquirt will drive it. It fire #1 at first tooth ans fire #2 at 1st missing tooth witch is 270 deg apart

HD's are 45 degrees, except for the one cylinder bikes and one bike of which there were 1000 made during WWII that were 180 degrees, clones of a BMW but I doubt those will see much uS action.

So how's the odd fire code going? I have my 22R->22RE conversion running (woo hoo) and I'm looking at that Sporty now.
