86 MR2 with MS2

Post by orcuttkickboxer »

I recently baught the MS2 assembled unit. To make a long story short, I hear my stock distributer is difficult to use with MS. So I was thinking of trying to use the stock ecu to control the ignition and the MS2 to control fuel and the rest of the goodies.

*Disclaimer*
I have no wiring, or stand alone ECU experience AT ALL. I'm actually on here tonight trying to get an understanding of how to setup and use my MS2.

Thanks for any help you can give me. And no I'm not going to be using EDIS.

Hi Mark,

Toyota VR sensors (and dizzi's) can be used with megasquirt - they just need some careful planning and a few extra bits.

I'm using a VR dizzi from from an 22RE and there's a few 3SGE powered toyotas in the 'Success Stories' now. 7mgte and 4agze engines have similar dizzi to yours.

Read up on MegaSquirtnSpark-Extra as it could use the dizzi output (with two teeth removed from the 24-tooth wheel) to run spark and fuel.

<Karl_Skewes> - on this forum - knows a fair bit about using toyota sensors with MSquirt.

3sge into a clubman using all the factory sensors

anyway - good luck with the convesion!

cheers,
Charles.

My friend Eric has an MR2 that we are using an MS-II on. It required no mechanical modification, other than a jumper we put in the air flow sensor connector so the MS could control the fuel pump. We made a jumper harness using some old Toyota connectors such that we are actually able to unplg the MS and plug in the factory ECU in a matter of minutes on the side of the road, if need be.

One bit of advice, dont forget to make up the proper settings for the low impediance injectors. This was seomthing I forgot, and although it didnt hurt anything, after about 30 minutes of driving, it started acting VERY weird. I guess thats what happens when injectors overheat.
