Checking timing with EDIS

I have an EDIS-8 installation with MS2, all runs fine but I have been unable to confirm my timing. Can anybody explain why my timing light will trigger off coils B,C and D, but not A which has cylinder No.1 on it. I very occasionally get a couple of flashes and think my timing is in the right ballpark but cannot be sure.

I have just borrowed an old inline simple strobe light so hope that will confirm things for me. Did Ford devise a means of attempting to stop the public from being able to check their ignition timing? Or do I have some underlying driver problem within the EDIS-8, all wiring checks out (resistance is good, not just continuity)?

Some timing lights are particular about polarity. Have you tried just
rotating the clamp on sensor so the other side of the sensor faces the
spark plug.
