Hello everyone!!! me and a buddy just recently came up on a mercedz 1982 300D turbo dissel car!!!!

from doing a quick round block and poping the hood this thing gots my total attention!!!!

its a 5 cyc motor with direct injection and a mean crazy looking fuel injection system..... its stock turbo charged probley a air research or very small garret? not sure yet...

my plans are this, very simple :P

bigger turbo, intercooler, and of course MORE BOOST :) with a touch of vegi oil :P

so this is what im pondering around, ive trying to get as much back ground info on this motor as possible, yahoo sure only gives backa million sites on replacement parts :( grr... and i figure maybe someone on hear would have some good sites or info to help me out with!!!

basicly im thinking two options hear.... 1. i do my turbo and intercooler etc.... im sure im going have to run more fuel of course , i have no way of "hacking" the stock fuel injection, its pretty insane looking...2. idea is to ripp off all the stock fuel injection crap, and of course Megasquirt it with port injection.... now dissel fuel/vegi oil going into a normal gas bosch injector im not sure on.... maybe it will work maybe not? bigger injectots might help??? heck if i know until i try it i guess ...

for say if i did do port side injection and megasquirt it, that be awesome!!! it be more then awesome tell u truth... would it work? dont know....

so what you all think??

well i found few sites of lerking around web, i guess theres the two standereds

direct injection and in-direct injection , but use injectors that are fitted into the cyclender head and not port injected.... it seems like u cant port inject it just because of the fact that the fuel only gets injected when the piston is near TDC on intake stroke ..... so i guess it wont work:(

that leaves me to only fittle with the stock compoents and see what i can do?

will a wide band o2 sensor work on a dissel??

hm.... there aew few differences between diesel and petrol motors.

1. diesels do not have to maintain any stable air/fuel ratio. in fact, diesels do not have throtttle body - intake is wide open all the time and the only amount of fuel is adjusted to create power (i'e no point for monitoring a/f with any sensor). however EGT is very desirable in diesel power tuning.

2. i'm not quite sure, BUT i believe diesels do direct injection into combustion chamber. sometimes they have 'pre combusiont chambers' - not sure how that works

3. obviouslt, there's no ignition timing, as there's no ignition. fuel ignites by knock (commonly know as premature detonation i npetrol engines)

however, diesel performance tuning is as follows:

1. more air (via turbo)
2. intercooler to drop charge temps
3. more fuel
4. clean injectors and incerase fuel pressure for better atomization
5. the best of all -> propane injection. basicially along the lines of Nitrous in petrol engines, but you use standard propane (e.g BBQ bottle gas), especially great for turbo diesels. google 'diesel fumigation'

i dont think MS is capable of controllling something liek this... please correct me if i'm wrong.

I'm guessing it has mechanical injection (Is it louder than modern diesel trucks? It's mechanical). This means there is this crazy thing on the front of the eninge that is like a dissy, but for fuel, and within it is a crazy pump that shoots fuel in to each cylinder in turn. There should also be a vaccum type deal to give more fuel under boost, whether you can crank up boost and expect enough fuel I do not know. MS cannot control the fuel injection pump, of course, but you could use it for boost control, maybe propane and monitoring/datalogging as well.

This is all assuming it is not EFI, but chances of finding EFI on an 80's Diesel are low.

From what I remember from my dad's obsession with these engines years ago, it's a mechanical indirect injection setup. German injection pumps from the 80s are pretty small and really wierd too. I read that M-B used indirect injection because they couldn't get direct injection to be quiet enough. They are verrry quiet, almost sound like a gasser at idle (I see a pristine one on campus now and then *drool* )

should be a ai-research T3 "50trim" .42/.48 ar's, using a pair for my mustang :)
