first test run... need advise

Post by 4x4 ext »

MS II V3 Board. MegaTune .717 2.1 code...... Looking for how to use and read datalog. I understand how to view but not sure what it all means. Timing pings and I have it pretty low across the table .... lacks power and buck , so I increases fuel across the table. Data log looks loike noise interferance, not sure. Any advice would be nice.......

Looking at datalogs is good for diagnosing problems, but you need seat-of-the-pants skills, too. Try cruising at a fixed load and speed, pick a speed that gets the tuning point right in the middle of a cell, something like 2500 RPM and 60 kPa (that's a typical pair that will exist on most VE tables, look at yours and pick any easy one).

Turn on MT, start a datalog and get to the graphical 3D fuel dialog. As you are driving along, have your tuner add and subtract fuel from it in moderately large chunks, say add 5% (ctrl-shift-up-arrow), see how it acts, add another 5%, and so on until you feel things going to hell. Then go the other way, get a feel for what it feels like when too rich and too lean and you figure out how to find that sweet spot.

Do this in a couple of places on the table and you'll start getting a picture of what it should look like. When your tuner wants to make a note of something in the datalog, have them hit the space bar; this adds a datalog "MARK", which shows up in the datalog viewers somehow so you can pinpoint specific events (Mike's MSLVV gives you a list for "jump to mark" and Phil's MSLV has red vertical lines, iirc).

Once you've got some logs with known behavior and marks at the point where the behavior is exhibited, you an start looking them over and analyzing what patterns present themselves.

Ok good news..... I found tuning to be more exciting the smoother the engine ran. Adjusted timing and fuel at idle with 3 d maps...AWSOME... My idle jumps between 875 and 940 which is alot beter than before. Timing still pings with excelleration. Did some more reserch and disided to chang dwell from 1 ms to 4 ms under settings .... ignition and dwell, however under dwell settings the rest are 0 due to IM NOT SURE WHAT TO PUT THERE.... Im running factory ford TFI so Im not sure if anything go in there.... Ford guys help me out. Not even sure if I should have change to 4 ms but afterwards the engine ran smooth with no pings....

With TFI i've been running 50% duty cycle with good results. Do you have the computer controlled dwell module?

Ibelieve its computer controlled. Its not mounted in the distributer. Im going to try some new timing tables tonight and see what happens. I guess it would be nice to look at someone msq file to compare too,, but wheres the fun in that right. I have a 351 roller out of a 95, world heads, x303 cam, 9.5:1 comp with factory truck intake and throttle body. Running factory IAC and TFI.I never thought of changing to 50% duty cycle but it makes sence. I wonder if my coil can handle 4ms or if I should change it back to 2ms... Well trial and error I guess. I also have engine noise in my stereo and my battery goes dead over night. I had the noise before MS II but not a baterry issue. I think I might have an alternater issue but wont know till I put an amp meter on it to norrow it down......Also included is my last data log. I dont know what most of the guages at the bottom are but the obviose ones. Some go into the red zone and I dont even know what the are. Any help would be great
