First Start (Both Cold & Hot)

For engine experimenters, the MicroSquirt® PCB is offered in a module format with enhanced capabilities to be plugged into other boards. This is the place to discuss the MicroSquirt Module.

First Start (Both Cold & Hot)

Post by CavemanXXL »

Hey fellas,

My friend has a MicroSquirt installed on a X16XE engine(1998 Opel/Vauxhall Tigra). There is no IACV(stock one is not compatible with the MS). The idle is stable at around ~900rpms. It takes takes too long to start the car both cold and hot. Is there a way around that ? Can we make the car start faster without the IACV via a setting or an option in the MS software ?

Thanks in advance,...

Peace...

Hi CavemanXXL
There is no IACV(stock one is not compatible with the MS).
Even using the add on boards that other folks make?
How long is too long?
Cold starting might be improved with more fuel, but have you data logged this behaviour or got an .msq to check your settings.
Hot starting with just a touch of throttle.

The easiest option may be to add a mid '90s VW IAC valve - they're a PWM type that is easy to use with the MicroSquirt, and they have hose type fittings that make it easy to retrofit.

Is this a MicroSquirt (comes in a case with a heavy-duty 35-pin AmpSeal connector), or a MicroSquirt Module (bare board, you put it in your case)? As suggested by 24c, the Module can accept additional components to drive a stepper IACV directly.

The cased MicroSquirt has no such ability, but there are two recent add-on modules that use the PWM FIdle signal to drive a stepper motor. There is one unit that allows more control options of the IACV, but requires the use of the Extra code and a 5v supply. My unit can operate with Extra or B&G code, feeds quite happily on 12v, and requires fewer wires. The first units have just been shipped to a field installer, and I am anxiously awaiting the results.
