Microsquirt + 084 Chainsaw is this possible?

Post by canadiancarguy »

I have been thinking about this for awhile now ever since I read the possible applications for the microsquirt. Now I see the biggest problem faced is their is no power supply on a chainsaw, so no way of powering the fuel pump, injectors, and microsquirt, or is there? What are the power requirements to get all this working without adding a car battery to the weight of an already very large and heavy chainsaw? Would anyone have any suggestions?? Also a very small throttle body is needed and the saw is air-cooled so no coolant temp probe either. I haven't heard of anyone microsquirting something as small as a hand held 112cc two stroke yet.

I have no idea what this guy did - but thought I'd pass this post on to you. Maybe you can contact him and find out what he did.

At a guess, I'd say you're looking at a minimum of 5A to run a uS system. That's 1.4A for fuel pump (if you can find one of the low current Delphis), 2A or so for uS itself, and about 1.6A averaged out for running injector and coil.

So, you would need to strap on a small sealed lead acid battery, a regulator/rectifier, and convert the magneto to supply some current suitable to charge the battery. Seems doable, though. You'd also likely need to change the coil to one designed to run with a 12V DC primary.

For my project (1982 Yamaha SECA 750) I couldn't find a reasonable source for one of the Delphi fuel pumps. I ended up going with a Bosch that's supposedly used on Harley Road Kings. It draws 4.4A. I also have an O2 sensor and a PWM idle control valve that add to the current draw on my system (plus, of course, having two coils and four injectors to run).
