The port checker is looking specifically for MegaSquirt responses, so if you don't have one connected and running, it will say there's nothing there.

after searching he forum and looking at other peoples problems, I have tested my laptop using microsofts hyper terminal. the results were strange...i am using a serial card adapter, which is port 7. this does not respond at all. but if i try port 3 i am able to type a letter...but it does not echo back !
the only other port i have is the printer port...15 pin female housing, i assume this is port 3.
can the printer port be used for microsquirt ?...if so what connections do i use.
I need a plan B...maybe i need to find a laptop with a serial port installed

You may need to re-install the driver; it sounds like an issue with the USB adapter now.

It finally works..
i have made up a new com cable and borrowed a mates old Think pad...
it took about an hour to get the serial port setting sorted out...but now i have a working microsquirt.
Now the fun begins
