Megasquirt II Input/Ignition Options Data Collection
Read the manual to see if your question is answered there before posting. If you have questions about MS1/Extra or MS2/Extra or other non-B&G code configuration or tuning, please post them at http://www.msextra.com The full forum rules are here: Forum Rules, be sure to read them all regularly.
Megasquirt II Input/Ignition Options Data Collection
What do you think about posting up a few specifics about our setup configurations to try to pick out a few patterns of what works best where? Perhaps something in the format below, keeping general chat to a minimum. A few key comments or observations about other settings that may or may not have worked would make a good look up for people.
Example:
V2.2 or V3.0 MSII: 3.0
MS Setup: Ignition and fuel
Code version: 2.54
Basic engine type: DOHC 2.3l Gasoline
Cylinders: 4
Engine speed sensor: VR
Sensor location: Crankshaft
Wheel type: 36-1
Skip teeth: 9
Delay Teeth: 8
Ignition module: EDIS
Trigger offset: 90
Skip pulses: 3
Predictor Algorithm: Last Interval
Time Mask: 10
Percentage Mask: 25
Cranking %: 70
After-start %: 80
Normal Running %: 25
Ignition Capture: Falling edge
Cranking Trigger: Calculated
Project experience:
Running successfully with MSI – much experience. Just switched to MSII. At setup/initial tuning stage now.
Comments:
Tried all predictor algorithms, current gives most stable idle. Adjusting normal running next pulse tol down to 20% made large difference to stability. No specific testing over 4000rpm yet.
Issues:
None at present – more testing needed.
People could browse through, pick out something similar to their setup and see if there’s any correlation between certain setup tweaks and reliable performance. I’m trying to keep track of quite a few threads covering this sort of thing at the moment so I’m sure I’m not the only one gathering this info.
What do you think?

the basics of how things work .
I've answered a ton of questions about simple (to me) things , like
fuse sizes , or can I use my OEM 02 Sensor , or to get a little deeper ,
can I use EGTs to set my timing .
I can't believe how brave (or foolish) some of these guys are ,
I would have never attempted Fuel Injection without first learning
everything I could about how everything in an engine works , and then
learning everything I could about MS , my car has to start and run without
a doubt , to get me to work every day .
This info needs to be made readily available for people wanting to change to MS .
Maybe I should write a book , I've got a good start in the Forums .
A list of website links on basic principles would be good too .
I think I'll start on this .
Things work or don't work for specific reasons , understanding why is the key .

There do seem to be many many questions on the same simple subjects repeated over and over again. However, that is the natural way people pursue info in forum based sites. Most forums go to great lengths to drum it into people to use the search button before asking questions.
There seems to be a very friendly helpful bunch of people here and the forum hasn't (yet maybe) deteriorated to short sharp posts saying "Search Button!" or similar - which is nice and does give a slightly more welcoming feel to the site.
Anyway, I've seen many many posts on MS2's ignition options, especially the Predictor Algorithm options and their relative merits. As there doesn't seem to be any official literature on this anywhere I thought some empirical observations grouped together would be a good thing.
I'm not quite sure if you agree or not Jim, did you think that small bit of comparison between setups would be useful? I couldn't tell if your post had an element or sarcasm to it or not.
Cheers
Dan
and
No , No sarcasm was intended (although sometimes I'm tempted) .
One more Item as an example , I can't find any reference to the
02 sensor "PID/Smith Predictor" on the MS site or the whole web .
Maybe Eric can shed some light on this .

Someone has done exactly this, albeit for the Jaguar XJS. On the http://www.jag-lovers.org website is a "book" called "Kirby's book". All he did was to compile (basically copy and paste) sensible forum submissions into a single structured volume MSWord document. This book has become the XJS owner's "bible". I suggest you have a look and get going! You have the gift of writing without doubt. Perhaps soon we'll have "Jim's book" on Megasquirt and EFI principles
PS: I've my car to the point where I can just get in and drive. I still have to get it on the dyno for WOT tuning and there is still two AE situations I have to fix but for the rest, she's going better than EVER before. Fuel consumption has decreased by at least 25% and the increase in light throttle torque due to significantly leaner mixtures (15.5 - 16.5) is mind blowing!! And you're right, at times I was certain that I was foolish (not brave) to start this but now the sense of achievement is quite something...
